did anybody here know that communism in the U.S. had its roots in christianity?

In the 50s and 60s there were a lot of religious groups that flew under the anti-communist banner like Fred Schwarz christian anti-communist crusade, anti-communist pastor and radio personality Billy James Hargis and the John Birch Society. But I found that communism and socialism had its roots among protestant clergyman including Harry Ward and Walt Rauschenbusch. Did anyone here know about any of this?

Communism, as an organized political force, was effectively dead in the United States by that point anyway: CPUSA (which had been decently-sized earlier on) collapsed almost completely after the double blow of Khrushchev's condemnation of Stalin and the 1956 Soviet Invasion of Hungary.
