And it is the other party, the party that you yourself are a member of, that the vast majority of the people who are still alive who supported those laws when they existed consistently vote for.

Not true.  The vast majority of the segregationist Democrats stayed Democrats and never became Republicans.  Strom Thurmond did, but he was the only high-profile segregationist to become Republican.  Bob Byrd was still a Democrat in 2010; Fritz Hollings was still a Democrat in 2004.  George Wallace, Bull Connor, Lester Maddox, George Mahoney, Sam Ervin, Al Gore Sr., Herman Talmadge, Orval Faubus, Ross Barnett, and all the others remained Democrats for life.
