Joel Kotkin explains.

It seems like a pretty good analysis of how the Democrat coalition has changed over the years into something quite different and possibly quite ascendent during these times. So I'm interested in what people think the future holds. Does this coalition hold? Break? Grow? Shrink?

He basically believes that the Democrats are some kind of anti-growth party that is based soley in cities. Its fate will depend on Obama's fate. If it does well, that will be the future of the party. If Obama loses, then the party will need to find a new coalition. The choices will be to go the Clinton route and rely on a shrinking base of whites or stay with the Obama coalition of shrinking whites.  It appears that there needs to be a way to expand into fast growth non-urban areas, instead of the the slow-growth areas of the Clinton years.
