Couldn't they just build a dirty bomb and set it off in area with a large concentration of our troops?
Yes- and people forget that Saddam's loyalists attempted the same thing... but what is clear is that Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon means that every day they beome stronger and can therefore get away with more without fear of retribution

Sbane- I agree with your point on Pakistan- but they have not committed acts of war against us, at least not acts sanctioned by their highest leaders

Any and all peaceful options of dialoge must be used before we consider declaring war on Iran. This resolution falls short of being a formal declaration of war.
We all know sanctions don't hurt the two bit tin foil turban wearing Islamofacists in power. The sanctions hurt the citizens who desire western style freedom.

While I agree that Iran is guilty of what is said in the resolution, to have my support it must be a formal declaration of war.

As my first act as Senator, allow me to say something I honestly never thought I would say: I agree with JCL.

Before I throw my support behind any use of military force, it must first be clear that we have expended any and all attempts at peaceful resolution. While I grant that Iran - specifically its leadership - is in no way an innocent party, I do not believe in throwing peace to the wayside before we're certain we've done everything in our power to avoid it.

And even then, even if we are ultimately left with no choice but to use military force against Iran, I - like JCL - will only support it in the form of a formal, Constitutional declaration of war, not in the form of giving the executive branch the power to do whatever they want to a country, whenever they want.

I have many more points to make about this resolution (which I will be steadfastly supporting), but I've got a question for my colleague, Senator Townsend, first.

What would constitute a "peaceful resolution"? The only resolution that would really come with a trustable guarantee of peace would involve Iran giving up its nuclear weapons—that is, unless you ignore the hateful rhetoric from that nation's leaders.

So—if Iran's forfeiture of nukes is the only peaceful solution to this crisis, how likely do you really think it will be that such a resolution will ever come about?

To be perfectly blunt, I have no idea. But just because peace may not be likely doesn't mean it's not something worth trying for, particularly when the alternative is military action that we would be paying for in Atlasian lives.

All I suggest is that we should at least give diplomacy our best shot before we commit to the idea of open warfare, especially against a country with nuclear capability. And as I said, should it come down to that, our move should come in the shape of an official declaration of war, not a resolution giving the President unquestioned rein to do whatever he pleases to another nation.

See, I believe the strong point of this proposal is that it gives authority to the president to decide which course of action is best (if any). Him and his military advisors might decide that quick and covert action would be our best chance at neutralizing Iran's nuclear capabilities. In that case, declaring war via the senate could potentially blow our tactics, jeopardize the mission, and put the safety of our soldiers at considerable risk.

Hagrid, I understand your concerns for the safety of our fighting men and women. I have the same concerns. A formal declaration of war is needed to show the world we respect our own laws regarding war powers. We have failed to declare properly since Korea. Doing it this way would show that we've turned the page. Plus we may gain support doing it this way.

Are we just about done here or are there issues that still need to be addressed with this?
