This is something else that's the Republicans' fault.

If they didn't close the shelters, this guy wouldn't have had to start a fire to keep warm.

Hah, for a minute I thought you were saying that the homeless guy who started the fire might be Bandit.  Not such a stretch, as Bandid seemed to come from the working poor class - a type of person who is very likely to be homeless at times in the US.

How about we ship the homeless overseas.  Ship them to Canada.

That statement may seem ridiculous at first glance. But such a plan may be better for everyone involved. The homeless would be better off in a comfortable welfare state. Meanwhile, Americans will not be plagued with panhandlers any longer. Win-win.

Yeah, only Canada gets shipped tons of people that are known not to want to do anything but live off welfare.  I addressed this before; the point of a welfare system is to support the people already living somewhere, not to accomodate everyone on the planet.  His Majesty King Ralph Klein of Alberta already did this with Vancouver; we don't need an entire country now doing it.

Ah, wasn't this part of the great liberal causes of late 1970's that we shouldn't "warehouse" the mentally ill?

Homelessness isn't necessarily just a problem of mental illness.  When the basic wage is $6.50 or $7.00 an hour, and apartments are at least $500 a month, any working poor person is very apt to become homeless at a moment's notice, even if his brain is functioning in a normal fashion.

it's a reasonable interpretation, to a point.  but also by that logic, it's the fault of both major parties for being so keen on keeping our system of user-pay services for health care.  If the socialists or communists had their way, then we'd have socialized medicine, and the man's mother could have aborted him on the government's dime, so he'd never have grown from being an unloved boy to a disfunctional adult.  that's the problem with these analyses, you have to make waaaaay to many unsupported postulates to draw the conclusion.  (opebo also points this out as well, albeit in a much more mundane fashion.  It should also be pointed out that one can be irrational and abnormal, and not be homeless.)

still, it's a hell of a story.  is there ever any good news?  let's see...

WAPO today:  9 killed in CA train derailment, Iraq crash kills at least 30 marines, tractor-trailer crash hampers I95 traffic in MD, Microsoft launches anti-piracy plan, ....  hmm.  OH, here's a good one:  Bush nominee Rice passes Senate for secretary of state by vote of 85-13.   Yay!  (guess you just gotta dig deeper for the good stuff)
