Democracy.

(Who knows ? Could help Chavez or Capriles. Chavez already won re-election in 2006 with big turnout).

The turnout in the five polling places existing in Spain was around 70%, says the Venezuelan Embassy.

Well, that's a good thing. Now let's hope the results are fair.

Polling stations will be open till everyone who's in line has voted. Which probably means delays.

Polls close at 11 local time- 10:30 Eastern. That's if they close on time, which I doubt.

Apparently there are no legal provisions for a recount. Oh dear.

Half-hour time zones are so ridiculous...

Most stations closed but quite a few still open. Tabulation won't start till they all close, probably a few hours.

Not as much of a problem as it could be, because an automatic recount (counting the paper reciepts and comparing against the voting machine's tally) is part of the election night procedure.

An "exit poll" shows Chavez narrowly losing: http://www.abc.es/20121008/internacional/abci-primeros-sondeos-venezuela-201210080050.html

Exit polls are all over the place. Both men are calling for patience as voting is still going on.

Here's the NYT Twitter feed if anyone's interested.

From what I'm reading there will be no partial results until a trend for one of the candidates is irreversible. I'm guessing that if the election is close it will be a while for some results to appear.

Of course there wasn't supposed to be exit polling but Lief posted one so I suppose anything is possible right now Tongue

Looks like Chavez won- his supporters are setting off fireworks and his ministers are sending out celebratory tweets. Still nothing official.

Leakage from the National Electoral Council: Chávez won by 1 million of votes. Dissapointment at Capriles' HQs.

There will be no next time for some 20 years I'm afraid.
