It's a sound choice, but the purpose of announcing his pick now was to change the narrative. Unfortunately, the Ryan pick plays directly into the story Obama was trying to tell.

As I said on IRC last night, a big part of the reason I was doubting it would be Ryan was because I couldn't believe Romney's campaign would make such a stupid choice.
