I think you are right. Was sort of trying to create a modern-day version of a Southern Gothic/Southern Agrarian writer who also happened to be gay.

I've run into a few people of this type you mention (artistically inclined and from Evangelical, rural/small town Southern background) online. Based on that, I would say she is a conservative Republican albeit not as "hard edged" on race/immigration issues but still very pro-life, protective of "religious freedom", and so forth. Would not be a fan of Trump's style or character but gets a lot of her political news and information from sources like Prager U or Ben Shapiro. If she moved to a bigger metro area for school, especially to a blue state metro and/or attended church less frequently, I would have a different answer.
