To rank the post-war elections:

1. 1948
2. 1968
3. 1992
4. 2008
5. 1960
6. 1972
7. 1980
8. 1964
9. 1976
10. 2004
11. 2000 (would be lower if not for Florida)
12. 1988
13. 2012
14. 1952
15. 1996
16. 1984
17. 1956 (no real doubt as to the winner)

2008 has to have been more exciting than 1992. It seemed like everybody was into it on both sides.

I would say 1984 is a little higher. The election gave us "hymietown", "where's the beef?", the first female VP candidate, "There is despair, Mr. President, in the faces that you don't see, in the places that you don't visit in your shining city", "We'll both raise your taxes. The difference is, he won't tell you. I just did", "there's a bear in the woods", "morning in America", "I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience", and the former editor of Ramparts voting for Ronald Reagan, was an entertaining election, even if the outcome was never seriously in doubt.

1968 no doubt about, just look at the storylines.

1. The embattled President steps down.
2. Bobby carries the torch but is shot down at his peak
3. Nixon makes a comeback.
4. The war in Vietnam
5. Riots at the DNC.

Surprised HBO hasn't made a series about this yet.......

Beginning with 1984, in order from most to least.

1. 1992
2. 2008
3. 2012
4. 2000
5. 1984
6. 2004
7. 1996
8. 1988

1992 because after 3 GOP wins in a row we were ready for change, Perot's antics, Clinton's charm.
2008 because of the Hillary/Obama primary battle and historicity.
2012 Mitt Romney became first person to run against an incumbent President of color.
2000 I thought Bush would win
1984 first election I voted in. I attended school in Cambridge, Mass. and was surrounded by the vibe that nuclear war was inevitable if Reagan was re-elected; little did I know that in my hometown (Macomb Co, MI) sentiment was quite different.
2004, 1996 no real surprises
1988 worst and most embarrassing election. "Don't worry, be happy", "Bush reminds every woman of her first husband", Willie Horton ad, Dukakis' tank ride, "Read my lips", spin control, low voter turnout, no surprises. The only redeeming feature was my meeting Ron Paul in person.
