He can't afford to lose PA... and he probably would... so this is the sensible thing to do.

Sad

Thank you Rick for standing up and being the more conservative choice in this primary race. It's sad to see you drop out.

It's been awesome to be able to back a candidate who I genuinely liked.

Will he still remain on the upcoming ballots? And I am the only person on the forum who voted for him?

I guess we all can agree that Santorum pulled a great figh, starting from Mr. 1% to a man, who seriously threathened Mittens machine.

Heck, I don't like him and I never will, but he impressed me this year, I confess.

Not sure if I'm voting for Santorum, Paul or the Herman Cain when the Texas primary comes around, but Rick's definitely a possibility.

Sidenote: I hate this trend of "suspending" instead of just plain withdrawing. Did Hillary Clinton start this?

It's a formality that has to do with campaign finance law.

Will he still remain on the upcoming ballots? And I am the only person on the forum who voted for him?

I will obviously vote for him.

Can you do that in Pennsylvania? Isn't that the state with the stupid primary?

Uh...yeah but why wouldn't we be allowed to vote for someone on the ballot?

Yeah, for all the crap Phil has taken on here for Santorum-related stuff he did sort of win against everyone who laughed off Santorum as a contender.

Had Santorum taken Michigan, however narrowly, he might very well have taken Ohio and the race could have gone on for quite some time.

Despite dropping out, he's keeping his scheduled event with Dobson this evening. Lines have apparently been out the door since this afternoon...

No, candidates have been doing that for ages.  McCain suspended his campaign in 2000 rather than dropping out, for example.

Gettysburg is a weird place to announce that you're quitting something though.

I think Eisenhower used Gettysburg as a backdrop a lot.  He might have lived near there though, I'm not sure.

His farm is next to the battlefield.  I think it's an historic sight now.

I thought the only vote there was for delegates.

No. You couldn't seriously believe that there wasn't any Presidential preference vote...did you?

The delegate vote is the only one that matters. The Presidential primary is essentially a straw poll.

Santorum committed a murder suicide. His withdrawal has murdered any chance of a brokered convention (and thus anything for Ron Paul) and then he proceeded to end his own campaign, which obviously accounts for the suicide part of this analogy.

What is Newt going to do?

I heard Newt has reaffirmed he will go all the way to the convention.  I guess he is hoping to pick up all of Santorum's delegates.

Good, now we can hang the albatross that is the Republican Party on one candidate.
