The difference (which I'm amazed anybody is having to explain) is that King's post was clearly a joke.  Furthermore, if anybody is unable to detect that an article is satirical, let alone from the Onion, then sweet jesus, but also holy f--k.

It was an inappropriate comment given the subject matter.

Politico, wouldn't it be cheaper to let China take care of the asteroid itself than to borrow the money from them just so that we could say we did it?

Who said we should do anything about the asteroid if it is not bound to hit anywhere near us, and the nation(s) that are in its path did not want to help pay for our efforts? Of course, we should still do it for the goodwill involved...

For the record, I'd be in favor of letting it hit Iran, North Korea, and Cuba.

They announce these things months in advance, and the stories are usually overblown.  I don't see anything coming of this.

I'm guessing that it would be weaker than the Tunguska event.

Politico, weren't you meant to be scaling back the idiotic hackery?  I thought you had realized that nobody finds it funny or enlightening.  Not to mention that this is the off-topic board, for pete's sake.

Joe, King's comments and the Irish guy presenting an article by the Onion as factual is the hackery/trolling. I am only responding in order to give this place some semblance of balance. Has Democratic Underground re-branded itself as US Election Atlas, and nobody gave me the memo?

I would have made very different, non-partisan comments in this thread if not for King's comments and the posted parody presented as factual.

lol? I think?

The problem is, we may not see it coming until it's too late.

That meteor will arrive far too late. The world will be gone by 2013. Has it not read anything about the end of the world in 2012?

"We believe that the decisions of how to deal with the massive asteroid are best left to the individual," King added.

This will probably become my favorite (fake) quote of the year.

Make a trophy out of metal scavenged from meteorites and begin a new international sporting tradition of nuclear skeet shooting. Whenever a country successfully deflects or destroys a potentially dangerous asteroid it should get bragging rights until the next go around. It would be nice having WMDs devoted to something useful, entertaining, and widely televised for a change.

The Islamic Republic of Iran wishes to apologize that its entry in the nuclear skeet shooting went off course.  It was merely bad luck that caused it to come down in the Zionist state.
