Is the USA more socially conservative than in the 1970s?

The US is so much worse than it was in the 1970's, primarily because of greater social conservatism, as well as vicious enforcement of the laws against prostitution and drugs.  Heck back in the 1970's brothels were quite common in the St. Louis area.  The last 25 has been one long sink into puritanism.

Philip is right in suggesting that the terms Liberal and Conservative are too broad. You need to look at specific issues. This forum probably gives a pretty good idea of where people stand on issues. As you can see there is a very wide range of opinions on every topic and there is rarely a consensus on anything.

With regard to domestic policies, it seems to me that the country has not changed much in the last 30 years.

Our income tax  has become far less "progressive" than it was in 1960. That's a significant change.

Gay marriage was a ballot issue in many states in 2004. It was soundly defeated in every case. On the other hand 30 years ago it would not even have been discussed at all.
