What is the deal with this state? Is it moving right or left?

Maine doesn't really seem to be moving much of anywhere.

I've always got the impression that the south was left-libertarian, while the north was left-populist. Like many populist-leaning places compared to libertarian-leaning places, the north is less Democratic than the south.

That's my take from what I hear.

no, the south is rather liberal, the north is more populist. For some reason lots of people here seem to think Maine is an economicall conservative state. That idea sure as hell doesn't come from an observation of their policies. They only have the highest tax rates in the country and MaineCare, a socialized health care program. Maybe it's because it borders New Hampshire and elects two moderate Republican Senators. I don't know. Whatever the case Maine is definately economically leftist and slightly left of center socially, and it's moving left for the time being.

Northern Maine is Appalachian, borders the Atlantic Provinces and votes for Michaud. Guess the politics :-)

Maine had one of the biggest swings to Kerry in 2004.
