USA Today is reporting that former Speaker Newt Gingrich is mulling over a presidential bid in 2008:

I kinda think so.  He has a huge amount of negative baggage.

Hillary v. Newt. That'd be good.

Gingrich would do well among conservatives, especially running against someone like Giuliani. In fact, against a moderate he would win pretty easily. The general election would obviously be a lot different. A Democrat like Bayh would slaughter him, but against a liberal it would be neck and neck. Gingrich vs. Hillary? THAT'S a polarizing election!

He's being critical of the conduct of the war.  I'm not sure that he would be the favorite of the right in 2008.

He's probably just fuelling speculation to publicise his book.

As J.J. said, the Republicans won't nominate somebody who criticised the Iraq war (unless things change dramatically in the next two-three years).

I would advise the Democratic candidate to refer to Gringrich as "Newt" at all times.

I would definitely support Gingrich whole-heartedly if he was the candidate....

But his political career is over.  Died in '98.  Sorry.

Gingrich would have trouble holding on to Iowa, and New MExico for sure.. and up against Bayh he'd be toast.

He could still beat Hillary...

Gingrich vs. Hillary. How much fun would that race be? And I'm not even a fan of Newt! He'd win, too.

Newt would lose to Hillary, especially if she had a moderate VP on the ticket.  Bush states that would go to Hillary are Ohio, Iowa, New Mexico, possibly  Florida & Arkansas, Newt wouldn't win any Kerry states

Newt is very smart.

Remember that in 1994 he managed to defacto make the midterm elections about Bill Clinton and frankly kicked the %@#! out of Slick Willie.

The original "Contract with America" that the GOP ran on in 1994 was also great government, and was in large measure responsible for renewing the Reagan boom economically.

As for running for president?

The Yukka mountain nuclear waste depository is less toxic politically than Newt.

I like Newt,

I respect Newt.

Newt's IQ is higher than the combined IQ of about 1/3rd of the current House of Representatives...

President...?

Um...

No.

I know one thing, the current GOP is high on moral values and Newt Gingrich and moral values dont belong in the same sentence.  Afterall, this is the same guy who divorced his wife while she was dying of cancer.

Newt is a bad person, and a great leader.  His flaw is that he:

a) He doesn't practice what he preaches.
b) He was born a back bencher, and he still acts like one.

He'd be a great Chief of Staff for whoever the next GOP President is.

Le 'Newt' would certainly fair better against Hillary than Bayh

I dunno.  I would be really afraid if Gingrich were the candidate in 2008, even if he ran against a good Democratic candidate.  He is a very good public speaker, he preaches values, etc, etc.  Even if he didn't have a snowball's chance in hell, I would still fear America's future, knowing that Republicans chose him and were willing to vote for him.
