I think it is important to remember that if the economy is tightly controlled, eventually everything else will follow, and vice-versa. It is hard for the government to be so active in one and not in the other. They have to intertwine somewhere.

VERY TRUE. One reason I'm a libertarian - if the government gains power in one area, it won't be too long before it gains control in another and another.

Still, for the purposes of the poll, we can assume this hypothetical situation is static in nature - one economically controlling nation, one socially controlling nation.

Congratulations on completing high school, my friend. As a member of the Career Determination Bureau, I have determined you are not suited for college. I have determined the job you are most suited for, and that will most benefit our society. I have determined that your career is to work with the City Sewer Maintenance Department as a sewer cleaner. Have a nice day and enjoy your new career. Wink

I think many people are underestimating the part of having your career determined for you.

Yeah, well it'd be easier to start up a Revolution in the socialist nation.

Yeah, well it'd be easier to start up a Revolution in the socialist nation.

Both nations have wide support among their proletariate. I set up the countries so that weapons are forbidden as well, the reason being so it would be rather hard to start a revolution. The choice comes down to 'if you had to tolerate living in one of these hellholes for the rest of your life, which would it be?'

Living a starving life as a sewer cleaner(or other crappy job possible) versus possibly being a heretic and dying, but otherwise live a prosperous life. They both suck, for sure. However, I think I've got my decision - I'd go with the Holy Kindom, try to become part of the clergy or at least get in good with them so my chances of being a heretic are low. Of course, there is the chance that I'd end up with a good career in the Socialist Islands, but I'm not sure if that would be good enough considering I would still probably not get enough to eat.

Socialist islands.

I value social freedom over economic freedom.

Socialist Islands for sure.

I'm sure with my intelligence/personality scores or whatever they'd assign me a career pretty that would be good for me.

Sorry John but I can't vote. The socialist state might be more appealing to the Democrats and the Theocracy might be more appealing to some Republicans, but to a Libertarian both are unacceptable.

This post makes me even more thankful to be an American. Despite my frequent criticisms, it is still the best place to live.

I never said I supported anarchy. Take the U.S. government as it was when the Bill of rights was ratified, throw in a ban on slavery, and that would be close to a Libertarian utopia in my opinion. The government operated that way from the end of the civil war until 1913. Seemed to work well.

Perfectly fine. I understand that they would be pretty much the same. We'll let it be random genetic lottery which one you are born in. Wink

Spears don't make much of a blaze.
It would be much easier if guns were permitted. Then we could start a serious underground movement to overthrow those two waacko governments. You should have had a second amendment!

The USI, but...

I would make my living by running a black market. I don't care if they catch me because there's always the media I could get to, and the punishment is minimal. Eventually tey will have to legalise free enterprise and then I will open a radio station against Unity to incite democracy there.

You know, I never mentioned the punishments in the USI. The state gets rather pissed when you start running industries without permission - it's an assault against the natural order of things, and considered high treason. Wink

Hopefully nothing involving grammatical skills as that statement does not compute. Tongue

USI.  I wouldn't want to be in a country where the Salem Witch Trials were going on 24/7, as in Unity.  You're in constant fear of being called an enemy of the faith.  Not that USI is my dreamland.
