No... he resigned.

BIG difference. The challenge is on.

Hmm, cultural differences?  In America cabinet secretaries and congressional leadership are never fired - they always "resign."  I figured it was the same in Australia.

If you saw his comments... this was tactical. It's not a firing being covered up as a resignation. This is Rudd beating Gillard to the punch.

Mmm, as Polnut says, this is very different and more strategic than simply resigning. To use your cabinet secretary example, this is more like months of media speculation that the cabinet secretary would mount a primary challenge against the incumbent president, and then the cab sec comes out and resigns, blaming a lack of support from the president. That would carry very different overtones to just simply resigning. Especially since there had been the previous leadership challenge between the two of them.

Rudd made plenty of references to when he was challenged by the Prime Minister. He mentioned that he would never be part of a stealth attack on an elected PM (reference to the sudden-ness of the challenge to his Prime Ministership). He said the last time he resigned from a government position was when he resigned as PM and that there were many similarities with that resignation. He said that, like then, he had been publicly attacked by faceless men (I would think that if they attacked him publicly, they wouldn't be faceless, but that's irrelevant).

Anyway, he was obviously getting in before the Prime Minister could sack him, and therefore denied her the ability of making the first move.

Graham Richardson just said Channel Seven was going to run a very damaging story about Rudd tonight, that he knew about (and had threatened legal action over). The story was dropped as this was a bigger story. He suggests it may run tomorrow but perhaps the timing may have partially been to push the story off the news.

Lol... ahhh Richo, always needing to be relevant.

I think if the story is juicy enough, they would have run it regardless.

I've never been a big fan of Swan, but I do appreciate that he has hios beliefs and he's prepared to actually say them in public, something Gillard seems unable or unwilling to do.

Yeah, the ALP is pretty much a metastasized Atlasian party.

Yeah, I love the whole "I wish to record what an honour it has been to serve as Minister for Foreign Affairs in a Labor Government." Not, "in your Government" but simply "in a Labor Government."
