What challenges would an unmarried candidate for President face to election?

And who would act as First Lady?

The only precedent set was James Buchanan and his niece was hostess. Maybe a living female relative could act in the same capacity.

That's not accurate--Grover Cleveland had never been married when he was elected for the first time in 1884.  He married during his first term.

When Hillary ran for Senate, Chelsea served as First Lady. It would probably be a daughter/niece or other female relative.

I had been imagining a bachelor, but true, true.

If it was a female president, wouldn't she also be first lady?

What does "serving as First Lady" mean ? I didn't know the office of "First Lady" was established by the constitution. Huh
