I would also question the claim that Wilson never voted for William Jennings Bryan.  Wilson was one of our most overtly theological Presidents and Bryan was the most vocally religious Presidential candidate in history.  Wilson was a native Southerner (from Virginia) and not likely to be warm to the GOP; he was also something of a racist who, at best, was uncomfortable amongst blacks, and the GOP was the black man's party in Wilson's lifetime.  Lastly, Wilson, as President, appointed Bryan Secretary of State.  I firmly believe that Wilson voted for Bryan in 1900 and 1908 at the least.

McGovern voted for Ford in 1976 and for Carter in 1980

John Adams supported James Madison in 1812.

I've read LBJ strongly disliked McGovern, but at the same time, it's very hard to imagine him supporting Nixon given the belief that he sabotaged the Paris Peace Talks.

I'm not sure who Ford voted for in '80, given that he disliked both of them so much. Anderson maybe?

Whom did John McCain vote for in 2000 and 2004?  Which lever did Joe Lieberman pull in 2012?

I don't doubt that Liberman voted for Romney. McCain could have privately left the presidential lever blank.

A former president might prefer the candidate from the other party. But problably, he will not admit his preference in public in order to not damage his image in his party.
He has the option to vote in secret for the candidate from the other party. But this is not the most rational choice. The probability of a single vote decide the election is almost zero. The probability of a hidden person is recording a video of the polling place with a cell phone or a digital camera is very low, but is still a little bit higher than the probability of a single vote decide the election. So, it is better for the former president (or former losing candidate) to avoid this risk and vote for the candidate of his own party even if he considers in private that the candidate of the other party is better.

I wonder if LBJ voted for Nixon in 72.

I doubt Reagan was able to vote for anybody at all by 2000.
Mabye Nancy helped?

Maybe in his senility he reverted to his New Deal Democrat days and voted for Gore.
