I actually feel Newt will win the nomination. Romney will need to hold his Florida lead, but with the way Newt surged there a few months ago, I expect he will be ahead in the next poll out. If Mittens has any chance, he needs to release his tax returns, tackle the Bain question much more effectively among other things..

Newt's not gonna win the nomination. He's just gonna make it that much more entertaining.

Modern Republican primaries only. Democrats have done it a couple times, most recently in 1992.

Also, if you count Wyoming, the Republicans did it in 2008 as well.

BTW:

Are the Super Tuesday states WTA or PR ?

Because if WTA, Gingrich could have more delegates than Romney there with GA, OK and TN alone, even without winning OH.

I think everything before April 1 is PR.

No, most of the primaries are neither WTA nor PR.  They're some kind of hybrid.  In Georgia (the biggest delegate prize on Super Tuesday) for example, the majority of the delegates are allocated by congressional district, with each CD getting 3 delegates (regardless of how many Republicans are in the CD in question), and if you get more than 50% of the vote in a CD, you get all 3 delegates, but if no one gets 50% of the vote in the CD, then the top finisher gets 2 delegates, and the 2nd place finisher gets 1 delegate.

No, it's happened before on the GOP side as well.  In 2008:

Iowa: Huckabee
New Hampshire: McCain
Michigan: Romney

Right, though it was an odd contest, because it was basically party bosses picking delegates, and not a primary or caucus.  And it got virtually no media attention.

But either way, whether you count it or not, three different candidates won the first three contests.

And here we were just a week ago thinking it'd be a 50 state sweep by Romney.

Should be coming in the AP's tally soon.  Romney won it 43-35, according to the state's website.

I don't suppose there are any websites that are tallying the results by congressional district?

It's not yet in the AP tally, but shows up on the state's unofficial election results website.  (Which otherwise is trailing the AP tally for some bizarre reason.  It has precinct-level data.  Cain won a small precinct of 6 votes in Richland County.

Seems quite likely that Romney won CD1, then.

Goddamn first district RINOs. When Newt wins the presidency, the entire first district will be torn from South Carolina and thrown into the sea!
