Jan. 12th 2006:

U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) stood in front of a crowd in outside of his home in Penn Hills, PA. He patiently waited for the crowd to settle down. This was an incredibly tough speech he was about to give. He loved his job, he loved his life. But recently he became aware of the choices he has made in the past few years. Yea, it's time to make a change... he thought to himself.

The crowd finally settled down, and Sen. Santorum took the microphone:

"Thank you all for coming here today. I am so glad to be surrounded by so many of my supporters, friends, and most importantly family. I've come here to announce a decision. But, before that I just want to say it's been a true honor to have been Pennsylvania's Senator for two terms. It's really been an enriching experience for me, and my family. I love my job, and I love my life. However, sometimes the passion, and love that you have for your job make you lose sight of things. That's why I am here today. To make a decision I know is right.

Pennsylvania, I'm here to announce that come January 3rd 2007, I will no longer be  a U.S. Senator. I'm announcing my retirement from the U.S. Senate, so my family, and I can pursue other opportunities..."

Jan. 12th 2006:

Shepard Smith: Good Morning America! I'm Shepard Smith, and what you just heard was the retirement speech of Longtime GOP Senator Rick Santorum. This is shocking, as many believed the outspoken Senator would vie for a third term in Pennsylvania. There are many potential implications of this retirement for Republicans and Pennsylvanians. We'll pull out a poll taken  3 days ago by Rasmussen on Sen. Santorum's chances of re-election:

Do you approve of the job performance of  U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R) as of Jan. 9th 2006?
Yes: 39%
No: 48%
Undecided: 13%

Would you support Sen. Santorum in this year's Senate election?
Yes: 40%
No: 51%
Undecided: 9%

Would you prefer Sen. Santorum or St. Treasurer Bob Casey Jr. as your Senator?
Santorum: 37%
Casey: 49%
Undecided: 14%

As we can see here, Sen. Santorum faced an uphill battle for re-election in 2006. This may have played a huge role in his decision to bow out in 2006. Treasurer Bob Casey Jr., a Democrat, announced he was running last year. He is the son of the late former Governor Bob Casey Sr.

Now, Sen. Santorum faced close races before, like in 1994, and 2000 where he barely beat out his opponents. So some  say that there were other things that made him retire. Like a potential presidential run in 2008? or maybe an attempt to distance himself from the toxic label attached to the GOP due to President Bush's low approval ratings?

Well, whatever the reason, his retirement may change the balance of the U.S. Senate in 2007. Republicans  may have to fight for every seat to hold onto their majority, and this  may or may not hurt them.

We'll be back later with more information on this developing story...

I decided that this is too ambitious for me to do in my 1st timeline. I'll decide whether or not I'll make a different one later.
