Since most of you were born in the 80s and 90s I am curious what the first political event you remember is- Gore vs Bush?

For me, the earliest event I remember clearly is

My mother voted for Truman. I may remember her crying when FDR died but I am not sure if I am placing the memory accurately

How about you?

The first political event I can clearly remember was sitting in front of the tv as a kid and watching the Watergate hearings in the House.  I remember them as being very solemn.

I remember the Presidential Election of 2004 because my mom took me into the poll and I got to press the button for George Bush lol

2000. I only heard one/remember one mention on tv. I was automatically rooting for Gore because the name "Gore" sounded better to me then than what I thought was "Jorge Bush".

I vaguely remember the 2000 election (I was of the belief that George Bush was evil incarnate, which ended up not too far off the mark), and I clearly remember Bush v. Gore.

I'd like to say I remember thinking that they were going to fire the president during the Lewinsky scandal, but I'm not sure that it's not my mind being creative. I can tell you that I remember thinking that the Lewinsky scandal was Watergate.

However I can clearly remember our mock election in 2000. We had a voting machine in a booth and everything. I voted for Gore, but it took me about five minutes to choose. Sad

2000..My mom and dad went off to vote for Bush while my grandma watched my brothers and I. I have vague memories of being in a hotel room with footage of the USS Cole playing repeatedly. 9/11 of course is seared into me forever. I was in pre kindergarten, but I can remember the event clearly.

Edit: In a unrelated story, my Uncle described his schools 1980 mock election. His class (including him) voted Anderson, with the rest voting for Reagan. Only one kid voted for Carter and he got laughed out the class.

I have vague memories of 84.  I remember and became more interested in politics in the run up to 88.

I remember my mom and dad joking about how Bob Dole was going to lose in a landslide while we were in the car listening to NPR on election afternoon 1996.

Telling my family that Bill Clinton had been impeached. It turned out that they already heard the news. I, of course, had no idea what being impeached meant. I was simply repeating what I heard on TV.

I'm 44.  When I was in the third grade I saw a Carter sticker on a Ford, a Ford sticker on a Chevy, and a Dole sticker on a banana.  It was all very confusing.

92 election. I wanted Bush to win, I was highly disappointed when I asked my parents who won and found out he hadn't...

1988 election night. My parents told me that the guy they voted for lost and it was late and far past my bedtime.

Oliver North hearing.  I had no clue what it was about, but I thought he had a cute puppy face and a cool name.

I remember going to my Grandma's house when I was like 2 years old and my Dad asking me if I was a Republican or a Democrat and I told him I was a Democrat. I didn't understand a single thing about policy but "Democrat" sounded cooler to me for some reason and I pictured Republicans as old people sitting around a TV in a smoke-filled room. I have no idea why.

In 1996, I remember being disheartened that Bush wasn't running. I thought it was cool to have a Bush in the White House since I'd pictured shrubbery whenever I heard that name.

By 2000 though, I was old enough to actually have some understanding of what was going on, what issues each party stood for, what states each party did well in, etc.

The 2000 election, probably. I remember sitting in our first grade class and having a mock election (LOL). Bush had 20 votes, Gore had 1. The girl who voted for Gore kept denying it, but finally admitted it, saying it was because she thought he was cute.

Ike smiling on the black and white tube, when he won the 1956 election, and I asked my parents, why he was so happy, when he knew he had it in the bag, so it was not as if it was a big surprise. I was just sort of 6 years of age at the time. I was into delta functions at a very young age. Smiley

Writing a book report in 3rd grade on a biography of Al Gore; my mom wouldn't let me choose Bill Clinton.

The first actual campaign event I participated in was holding signs on the street corner when Ray Nagan first ran for New Orleans mayor.
