Harper has appointed Federal Court Justice Marc Nadon to fill Morris Fish's vacant SCC seat. That makes 5/9 justices Harper appointees, and next one will be next year when LeBel hits 75.

New Ipsos  poll out: 32 CPC, 31 LPC, 27 NDP.

Then the panel said the Ipsos poll could be DOOM for Dippers if continued.

Why is this result supposed to be so bad for the NDP, given the Liberal leads from earlier this year?

That was my quandry, although I suspect it might have something to do with the "Trudeau most formidable opponent - 69%" part... perhaps there's a thought that the NDP support might collapse into the Liberal column if they think the Liberals have the best chance at defeating Harper?

Marois is looking at abolishing school commissions, and it looks increasingly likely that we will have a December election.

Parizeau thinks the charter goes too far, will publish an article in the Journal tomorrow. Curious to see how the PQ reacts.

Here's Parizeau's column. He thinks the separation of church and state should be explicitly inserted in the Quebec CRF, reminds everyone that religious garb has never been an issue, and that this is in large part flamed by fears of Islam. Supports full implementation of Bouchard-Taylor. On the political side, harms the cause by pushing Allos towards federalist parties. Of course that last one scores a 10 on the irony meter, and the crucifix should be relocated.

PQ will make one modification to their charter: no exemptions. Sounds like an election plank to me.

In an interview with Paul Arcand this morning, Parizeau made many of the same points. He also revisited his infamous '95 comments (18:30 on), saying what he had in mind was the strong No campaign waged by Italian, Greek and Jewish community groups. Also noted that Yes was shut out in Cote-St-Luc.

Newsflash to OPC: Both sides of Rorange were always your target. Forum has 36/33/23.

If Prentice ran, he'd place third behind Kenney and Moore. Which would be sweet.

23 is a bit of a drop. I think that's what we got in the election. So naturally, Forum probably has us losing half our seats Roll Eyes

No argument there. Hudak's toxic unfavourables (I'm still mystified by them) absolutely have to move if he wants to win. Perhaps more performances like the convention's... BBQ, vests, something.

Only news in this Ivison column is that Harper would've quit after a decent interval had he not won his majority. Even that's not really surprising.

It's even more dumb when you look at where you stand to gain/lose. I think there was one close NDP-Tory race that the NDP won Tongue

LOL @ the idea of PKP ever getting his hands dirty and entering elective politics. Though the fantasy of Premier PKP would make me physically ill.

I think it would cause a significant part of PQ to leave or join QS/ON/etc.

They value their privacy enough to not go in the spotlight. If/when they lead something, it's from behind the scenes.

Long but interesting article on bilingualism, wholeheartedly agree with it. Problem, last I heard, was staffing issues. Though one can't ignore the political side either.

Mulcair again rules out tax hikes on the wealthy, said he'd expect McQuaig to be a team player but wouldn't say whether he'd muzzle her on the issue. She probably won't win, but hypothetically my guess is he'd let speak out to a limited extent as a release valve for left-wing pressure. Sort of like Harper does on certain abortion related votes for socons. Like the Grits Mulcair wants to return the OAS eligibility age to 65, and also wants an increase in payments.

With the Gritslide in NS, I'm expecting more Gritmentum being hyped by the national media.

I'm just happy that this "incumbents always win" crap we've been hearing is over.

Not necessarily. Wasn't over when the PQ won last year, was it? I totally agree that the trend should be shut down but will believe that when the opposition wins whichever provincial election is held next.

I suppose it's finished. In Quebec, Liberals lost, but came very close of winning, when polls were putting them much further back.
