Paul Desmarais Sr. has died at 86.   RIP to a legend. Sad

Yikes: I find myself in wholehearted agreement with Simpson on a foreign policy issue.

PKP will continue to attend meetings of select Cabinet meetings, per Marois.

Mulcair reiterates that he'll raise corporate taxes to the pre-Harper 22% (from 15% now), but "personal income tax increases are not on the table." Nor is a wealth tax. Also open to CETA, but no firm commitment either way.
Manitoba federal poll pegs 42% CPC, 32% LPC, with a tie in Winnipeg and Tory drop from 65 to 50 outside the Perimeter.

Ugh, our trend of outperforming in by-elections may halt soon.

Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney (CPC) will retire in 2015 because of redistribution.

QC public school graduation rates continue dropping: now down to 63% provincewide, 75% for Anglo public schools and 62% for Francophones. On Montreal Island that number is 46%. Now that's what I call a 5-alarm fire, politically speaking. Private school rate is 87%, FWIW.

In other Quebec news, new Leger is out. Some highlights: PQ leads 41-26-19 among Francophone voters, PLQ leads 41-30 in Montreal RMR and 42-28 in Quebec City, PQ leads 39-30 in ROQ. For the charter, topline is 46/41 approve but 53/33 among Francophones and 52/34 in ROQ. 45% say the economy's the same, 41% say it's deteriorated.

Federally the PLC is still ahead 33/26/22/14, with the NPD leading 30/27/26 among Francophones and Liberals ahead 58/21/13 among non-Francos. Somehow I highly doubt Harper's numbers will remain that high here. In regional terms Liberals lead 40/23/20 in Montreal, 27/26/25/18 in Quebec City, NPD leads 30/28/24 in ROQ.

Bottom line: Marois is in decent shape, though not in majority territory IMO. Mulcair's clawing back somewhat in ROQ and among Francophones generally. The only real surprise here is Harper getting 21% of non-Francophones, which I don't believe will happen for a minute in 2015. Certainly not surprised at PLC dominance among non-Francophones.

TCTC pegs the provincial poll as 60-58 PQ, with 5 CAQ and 2 QS. Probability-wise a coin flip. Looks like a gradual return to 2-party politics.

Cullen sounds like he won't be a candidate for the BC leadership if the vote is held next year as planned, suggests his federal colleagues wouldn't be either.

Wallin isn't the biggest spender. Biggest Cabinet players this fall will be Moore, Raitt, Fast, MacKay, Poilievre and Flaherty.

In a total shocker, young voters will not give Trudeau a new Sussex lease in 2015. While young people like him personally, they're ideological Dippers... which has also been my personal experience.

Harper's almost reached an agreement in principle on CETA, just waiting for final provincial approval. Grin

Who'd have ever thought repackaged Chretienism would elicit a shrug? Tongue

A whole slew of bullsh**t, reactionary policies, right-wing wanking and continued destruction of the public sector in today's Throne Speech, but we can all agree that this one takes the prize:

A law to ensure for every federal regulation added, one must be removed.

Seriously?

Only thing that interested me was interprovincial liquor carriage. Rest bores me to tears.

Good on yah.

Is there any reason why EKOS tends to get higher results for the Greens compared to other pollsters?

Something to do with the nature of our panel I guess.

QP props today go to the usual duo, Boulerice and Poilievre, with Calandra a new addition.

NDP doesn't sound so hot on CETA, nor do the Grits. In a mildly amusing QP moment, Boivin is accused of saying BS but says it could mean anything.
