It looks like polls will be held in U.P., Uttarakhand and Punjab in February and March.

The Election Commission of India has maps on its website of most of the 2007 elections (although not Uttar Pradesh, unfortunately).

I disapprove of their colour choice for Congress, obviously. Should be white.

It looks as though the bloc being appealed to in U.P. this time with especial vigor are the Muslims.

One interesting thing about that map is that Ludhiana looks kind of like Berlin.

Uttar Pradesh is pretty amazing. Why did Mayawati become unpopular?

Punjab map:

A shaded one might come latter.

As for Uttar Pradesh, Hashemite, your guess is as good as mine.

Tripura is of course the only Bengali state other than West Bengal, and my understanding is that Tripura politics has historically been closely linked with that of West Bengal.

Yes.  In fact a lot of immigrants into Tripura are Bengali.  Given WB politics were mostly dominated by LEFT front many of them brought their Left Front affiliations into Tripura.  The tribals in Tripura are threatened by Bengali migrations.  Tribals tend to support INC but they are outvoted by Bengalis that support Left Front.

The valleys in Tripura have always been settled by Bengalis for centuries if not millenias. There is no immigration into Tripura from West Bengal. If anything it would be in the opposite direction. A lot of Hindu Bengali migration into Tripura from Bangladesh though, but that happened decades ago.

Good point.  I misspoke.  The Bengali surge into Tripura recently was mostly due to the Partition of 1947 and the War with Pakistan in 1971.  Before Independence, Tripura was majority tribal but now it is over 70% Bengali.

It's important not to confuse Tripura with Assam, which is mostly not Bengali and has experienced ongoing Bengali immigration.

I think in Assam there has been more current immigration of Muslims from Bangladesh which has pissed off a lot of people. I don't know if there has been illegal immigration of Hindus as well, but most people wouldn't consider that to be "illegal".
