I forget where, but I seem to recall reading an old article from the 1910's where the Prohibition Party was convinced they could absorb the remains of the Progressive Party entirely.

This scenario is a bit off the wall, but please bear with me. Let's say that the Progressive Party did in fact merge with the Prohibition Party, and former Massachusetts Governor Eugene Foss was able to clinch the Prohibition nomination. Pushing an issue that neither Hughes nor Wilson addresses, how does the election play out?

Charles Evans Hughes (R-NY)/Charles Fairbanks (R-IN)

vs

Woodrow Wilson (D-NJ)/Thomas Marshall (D-IN)

vs

Eugene Foss (Progressive Prohibiton-MA)/Frank Hanly (Progressive Prohibition-IN)

Wilson  289: 47%
Hughes 242: 43%
Foss: 8%
Beeson: 2%

With some exceptions, Foss tends to take more from the Dems in the South, more from the GOP in the Midwest and West, and about even in the Northeast.

Eugene Foss was a one-time serious politician in Massachusetts that devolved into a political gadfly after his term as Governor. He switched between the Democratic and Republican parties atleast twice and tried to get the Prohibition Party nomination in 1916.

He was a hardcore prohibitionist and (IIRC) signed the first ever ban on "hypnotic drugs."

I'm not sure if he was so outspoken about his support for prohibition before getting elected Governor, but he was a Republican candidate for Congress in the early 1900's before that.

With the exception of William Douglas and David Walsh, Democratic statewide candidates tended to be bottom of the barrel in the early 1900's.
