I got put on a med two weeks ago.  one of the side effects is insomnia, lo and behold!  I've slept 3 hours since yesterday 8am, I've had a full night sleep once in the past ten days.  the only way I can guarantee sleep is through passing out drunk.  they tell you not to drink on the meds but who are they after all!  Google tells me it may be fine.  as does my intuition.  Anthem of the night is Green Day - Brain Stew, off of their 1995 album, Insomniac.

Ugh...my worst insomnia spell was three days without sleep. The things I do to go to sleep? I wouldn't go all the way on booze...that could just make you violently ill. What I do is play a mind-numbing game like Civ IV until Adult Swim comes on, drink 2 beers and then have sex/touch self and see how that works. Then again, if you are just really worried about something at school or work, you will probably only fall asleep until like 4 AM....and if you are dating someone, they might not like it if you are pacing in the halls  or watching TV at 5 AM.

Basically try a little bit of everything. You know?

I lie awake and write songs and poems about how I wish I could fall asleep but can't. Insomnia tortures me. The inability to fall asleep is uncomfortable. The tossing, the turning, the cold sweats...it's terrifying. It makes me feel like I'm going to die.

Whenever I'm having trouble getting to sleep, I jiggle my foot and it lulls me to sleep.  I've been that way since I was a little kid and I get it from my mom.  I think it's because it's harder for you to think about stuff when you're doing it... so your racing mind finally begins to slow down.

Yeah, I've had horrible insomnia all my life, and it's always been a huge pain to deal with. The best advice I can give would be to take a hot bath before getting in bed, then trying to get lost in thought until you just fall asleep. Works for me sometimes, anyway.

I should have been more clear, I was referring to marijuana and it's ability to put (some people) to sleep easier.

call your doctor and tell em what's happening. hopefully he'll either switch meds or put you on something to counteract it.

saw the doc today.  she offered to give me sleeping pills but I said I'd focus on the behavioral ("sleep hygiene") issues for the next two weeks.

also I just took a 1.5 hour nap and feel like I can conquer the world.

The worst thing about not sleeping well is the damn headache. That's even worse than the laying awake in bed feeling.

Well, I suffered from Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome a few years ago, otherwise known as College, but it's gotten better now. THC might be a good option to go to sleep, though I am not sure how it will interact with whatever you are taking. THC doesn't really have many serious drug interactions as far as I know. If you do get sleeping pills, please do not drink Alcohol.
