seeing a lot of weird figures in Norfolk, ex. 100+% change in an established midtown neighborhoods, 76% decrease at active Naval base.

Interesting to see some plurality "Other" precincts in Queens. A quick search on Wikipedia suggests it may be an Indo-Caribbean population.

Any large changes in downtown Norfolk are probably the result of redevelopment projects. There have been a lot of new condos and luxury apartment complexes that have gone up (or retrofitted from old hotels/other buildings) in the past decade. They also seem to have the erroneous data that overreported the population of one tract in West Ghent by a huge amount.

California Ethnicity in 2010:

No wonder Republicans are dead in California. Once Democrats get the 2/3 super-majority in the state legislature California Republicans will be forced to move to the left or stay irrelevant.

that one stood out to me as well, but I took a closer look and realized its not a residential area - it's the Norfolk Southern Railway. I guess that could be the address for the people directly involved in cargo transport for the whole company?  though not sure why it would have multiplied by over 10x in a decade.

WaPo and the Census Bureau need to find some cartographers with better knowledge of color theory.

That aside, these are great data-exploring tools. I also highly recommend the NYT's ACS-based mapping app.
wow, they have a gay couples map. I wonder what's going on in Borden TX?

Best guess is that the small population is skewing the results.

In any case it's interesting that in that very small rural population in Texas (256 households) you have more than a dozen same sex couples.

The ACS is based on sampling. They only interview about 1 in 10 households. So, if they turned up two gay households in Borden County, they estimate around 15-20 total, but of course those could be the only two gay households in the county, not at all unlikely in such a small county (and the odds are very good that that will happen every time in at least one tiny rural county).

Comparison to 1990. Look at Canarsie, Brooklyn from 1990 to 2000. White flight incarnate.

The census bureau has reported that some of their followup interviews (for people who didn't return the census form by mail) had been misrecorded.

http://www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/2010_census/cb11-cn181.html

I would suspect that some interviewers were more likely to consistently make the error than others.

My block has gone from 53.2% white in 1990 to 35.6% white today...but the black percentage has mostly remained the same. I'm guessing those Mexican grocery stores weren't around in 1990.
