Of course the Jewish parts of Toronto and (I think to a lesser extent, but certainly Mount Royal fits) Montreal are amongst the most affluent - and in a comfortable suburban sense - parts of the city in question. So what if one or two of their grandparents voted Communist?

Which would explain why Orthodox Jews voted for NDP. Well, that's supposing than the person who said that was right, but I have no reason to doubt an NDP organizer about that.

That would make sense because they aren't rich, many are even quite poor.

The Hasidic community in Outremont belong to one of those odd Satmar branches that aren't so keen on the actually existing state of Israel (or mainstream politics in general), which is the reason for the lack of Conservative strength in that riding. The statement is clearly false for any other part of the country.

I'm not sure how accurate the "PCs won Jews in 2007 because of religious schools" thing is. I can understand Orthodox liking it, but would secular/liberal Jews like it?

You explain it then.

I don't have an explanation for it, but I'm just saying that perhaps it isn't the religious schools thing which won so much of them over.

I know a lot of Jews were fascinated by John Tory's Jewish ancestry. At least that's what caught my grandmother's attention.

Here is the draft report of the Krago Commission to draw 124 ridings in Ontario, based on the proposed changes to the seat formula.

Good! But there is a major problem with Cochrane-Superior!

Here is a slight revision to my original map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=https:%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2Fsite%2Fkmzoverlays%2Foverlays%2FProposed124_v2.kmz&hl=en&sll=49.267993,-84.738191&sspn=21.511785,56.90918&vpsrc=0&t=m&z=5

I've changed the boundary around Peterborough and added Rural % to the populations.

I've also created an alternative map for Northern Ontario that reduces the number of seats north of the 47th parallel from five to four, and keeps all of them within 25% of the provincial average.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=https:%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2Fsite%2Fkmzoverlays%2Foverlays%2FAlternative4N_v1.kmz&hl=en&sll=49.267993,-84.738191&sspn=21.511785,56.90918&vpsrc=0&t=m&z=6

I saw those on rabble. Good stuff (I had mentioned my criticisms about riding names there).

However, this thread is about gerrymandering Wink Clearly your districts are too sane to be called that! Smiley

You mean, it'd need the kinds of ridings that'd make, say, Oak Ridges-Markham look rational...

I know the riding looks weird, but is it's not a gerrymander, is it?

There are a few weird ridings that Krago made, like Lincoln and that Conestoga riding. I also don't like his Essex NW (don't like the name of it either, but can't think of anything better)

I like the fact that I'm no longer the only one who considers the true "north" of Northern Ontario to begin at 47

No, it's more of a "cobbled-together leftover, marking time 'til the next redistribution" riding.

Great stuff! Ontario will no doubt adopt them for the next election as well EXCEPT the north wont budge, they will keep the same seats they have now to as to not lose influcene.. unless the liberals do as bad as we suspect, if so they just might give them a big f-u.

I hate the name Toronto-Harbour... Something for like Toronto-Old York or Toronto-Fort York would have a nicer ring to it Tongue

Toronto-Islands? *shrug*

Nippising would get a lot more competitive under that map. Smiley At Timmins' expense. Sad Also, it would be weird for Timmins to go from one of the largest ridings to a much smaller one. I also think Charlie Angus would be really upset, actually (although it would be much less traveling for him).

Also, Conestoga-Brant... thats rediculous looking, i just don't see that one being a realistic (i know this is not the right thread for realistic anyway) riding.

Did you see Lincoln? It's much worse.

I've created an alternative map for the 12 ridings from Waterloo through to Halton, based on adding the Paris/St George area of Brant to 'Hamilton', rather than to Waterloo Region.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=https:%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2Fsite%2Fkmzoverlays%2Foverlays%2FAlternative12C_v1.kmz&hl=en&ll=43.334168,-80.171356&spn=0.618303,1.451569&sll=51.959214,-87.283098&sspn=8.384975,23.225098&vpsrc=6&t=m&z=10

Halton look a lot better. Waterloo as well. I don't like the Brant/Hamilton set up however.  I understand the limitations of course.

Here's another alternative map, based on adding Muskoka to north Simcoe, and then rippling the boundary changes all the way down to Toronto.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=https:%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2Fsite%2Fkmzoverlays%2Foverlays%2FAlternative31G_v1.kmz&hl=en&ll=44.57873,-79.535522&spn=2.418048,5.806274&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=44.25371,92.900391&vpsrc=6&t=m&z=8

The plan creates five seats in Muskoka/Simcoe, ten in York Region, six in Durham, and 25 in the City of Toronto. Some of the ridings are a bit odd (what's not to like about a riding that stretches from Leaside to Wexford?), but on the whole it didn't turn out too badly. Enjoy.

Clarington has enough people for it's own riding.

I'm working on an electoral reform proposal, but have asked for Krago's goahead to use his map as my base.
