Madison - Just over half of Wisconsin voters support limiting collective bargaining for public workers, but a similar number oppose a new state law that does just that, according to a new poll done for a free-market group.

The poll again exposes the deep divisions in the state over Republican Gov. Scott Walker's successful effort this year to curb the power of unions, triggering widespread protests and the largest wave of legislative recall elections in the country's history.

Voters are likewise split on the job Walker is doing, with 49% approving and 50% disapproving.

Pretty good, Governor. You are more popular than Obama.

Are Wisconsin Democrats still aiming to recall Walker in 2012?

Was he leaping upward from a previous poll by the same group, or is that a mash-up of a different poll with this R poll?

If I recall correctly, the last poll (not from this group) showed his approval ratings going in a better direction, so this might be accurate.

You're right, in March he was at 43/54. Since the furor over the collective bargaining ended, he has leapt upward to 49%.

He probably isn't doing badly, based on the election results. Highly polarized state and he's popular with half of them.

In 1991, John Engler was threatened with a recall, as he was so unpopular.  I think that a recall actually went to a vote.  He won with 62% in 1994, helped by the year, but still a good recovery.

Walker was taken out of the media spotlight a month ago.  That's why.

This is a conservative pollster, by the way.

This is a conservative pollster, by the way.

The pollster, Douglas E. Schoen, is a self-described Democratic campaign consultant whose recent clients have included Evan Bayh and Michael Bloomberg.   In the past year, Douglas E. Schoen LLC has polled for other organizations, including Newsweek.   Although the groups buying this particular poll, the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research and MacIver Institute, are both free market think tanks with conservative bents,  I don't think Schoen has any particular axe to grind here.  The poll is what it is.

Schoen's polling firm was an outlier even in 2010.

We'll have a full poll on the WI recall tomorrow but the big picture is- independents are moving toward Walker, against recall.

I always found the recall idea a bit odd. Just poach him when the next real election comes around.

It's too bad Wisconsin doesn't have recall elections for legislation.  We'd have much better chances of getting what we want.

Walker is now in better shape, says PPP:

Do you approve or disapprove of Governor Scott Walker’s job performance?

Approve................. 47%
Disapprove............ 51%

Would you support or oppose recalling Scott Walker from office before his term is up?

Support ........................................................... 48%
Oppose ........................................................... 49%

If there was a recall election between Republican Scott Walker and Democrat Russ Feingold, who would you vote for?

Scott Walker ................................................... 46%
Russ Feingold................................................. 49%

...

All other Democrats tested trail.

Feingold should really get back in the game and run for Governor.

It's going to be close. Kloppenburg vs Prosser was very close with high turnout. I suspect it wll be within 1% either way.

Rasmussen says that Walker's "Strongly Approve" and "Strongly Disapprove" are each at 38%.

...I guess Scott Rasmussen doesn't like the overall approval rating, so he doesn't show it to non-subscribers.

You can't have a recall without a candidate, and there aren't any candidates. Baldwin's running for Senate and Feingold is retired. Hell, apparently even the Obama campaign told WIDP not to do it and got blown off.
