Yes, I think it may be generational.  phk posted in another thread like this one that "this wouldn't have happened in the 90s."  I was single and gettin' laid all throughout the 90s and I can confirm that it didn't happen then.  But then we hadn't supplanted real sex for internet porn at that time either.  Who knows?  If the internet had been as advanced in 1990 as it is today, then maybe we'd be as insular as these 20-year-olds are now.

Also, looking over the thread, folks are focusing less on genuine political differences and using this thread as yet another excuse to display their anti-religious bigotry.  And that's much more fashionable now than it was when I was younger.

Still, talk is cheap.  If JIm Bakker had a hot daughter who came on to any of these nerds, I'd venture than most of 'em would have no problem her.  At least for about 2 minutes and 40 seconds.  Then they could wipe it off and go back to enjoying their hatred and bigotry.

Admit it, boys.  The chance to get laid trumps bigotry.  At least for a while.  Hell, even Strom Thurman had a black girlfriend for a while.

I would think your key word is single. Single doesn't imply dating to me.

I would think your key word is single. Single doesn't imply dating to me.

Well, the US Census department has a pretty clear definition of single, so there's really no debate there.  Still, you may be on to something.  I, and maybe Gramps, are reading this more as "would you do her if..." rather than "would you date her if..."

Granted, they're two different questions.  Dating is a tricky issue.  Even in the good old days.  I'm 44 and have been married for 8 years, and was with the same woman for several years before that.  But till I was about 33 I was single (in the U.S. Census bureau sense).  But I went through a series of monogamous relationships interrupted by periods of (sometimes enjoyable, sometimes lonely) freedom.  During those interludes, I certainly wouldn't worry about someone's political ideologies.  During the monogamy, I'll admit to sometimes hearing things that made me cringe.  Still do, in fact.  I'm married, after all, and if you can't allow for any differences of opinion, then you should do everyone a favor and let yourself remain a bachelor.  Nothing wrong with that.

But I'm struggling with the idea of dumping someone who I otherwise like over the idea of political differences.  Then again, I'm something of a centrist.  I guess if I were a communist, then a fascist would be a bit too weird, and vice-versa.  Maybe that's the key here.  It might not be so much generational as it is a matter of how seriously you take yourself and your politics.  If you're the sort of guy who's willing to chain himself to a tanker, risking death or loss of limbs, in order to save a particular species of penguin, then I can stipulate to a certain degree of respect that you might be unwilling to commit to a serious relationship with a woman whose entire investment portfolio depends upon petroleum extraction and delivery.

But, really, at least admit that you'd take your drilling rig aboard her ship for an express ride.

Yes, I've dated a Republican, and for the record, he dumped me.

As long as she's secular and has no problems with an "alt" lifestyle, yeah.

Socially conservative girls hate me and probably either think that I'm a "fag" or that I'm "vulgar".

Of course, political opinions are absolutely irrelevant for these kind of things. And that would also be a great potential for animated discussions. Wink

I'm a Republican and my wife is a Communist.

Seriously?  I find it hard to believe there are any communists in China.

Stereotypes are usually true, prude.

Haha, the 'free market' at work, eh?

I've fooled around with a few conservative girls in the past, but never dated one. Not that their politics was in any way a turnoff, mind you, it's just that none of them seemed worth dating to me.

She wasn't politically savvy as to really have strong opinions on anything, though. She just liked thinner guys. Needless to say, I'm with someone who is as left wing as I am (Again, also not particularly political)
