Be carefull declaring Texas permenent status as a Conservative Republican bastion. Current demographics show that TX is becoming more and more Hispanic. Also consider that despite being absolutely terrible on border security/enforcement and supporting In-state tuition for illegals, our latest flavor of the month Conservative in the GOP For Prez beauty pagent, took a nosedive amongst TX's Hispanics. He got 35% in 2010, compared to 45%-50% range in 2002.

In NC, you had Republicans gain the assembly because of two things:

1) Rurals coming out and voting straight ticket Republican, instead of splitting for the good old christian homeboy Democrat to be State Senator or State Rep. This kind of splitting is what deprived McCrory of the Governorship in 2008. He ran miles ahead of McCain in the Charlotte Metro area, more then enough to give him the Governorship had every McCain voter in the rural areas voted Republican for Governor.
2) The new vote Obama got out in 2008, stayed home.

Most of the GOP gains in the other Southern States is the result of the final realization of the realignment that began in the 1960's. One you reach the top, there is only one way to go, down. Growth of minorities and the different attitudes amongst the young voters, mean that in 10 or 20 years, the type of Republican that currently get's elected in many of these states will not be up to task of holding onto these states at that point.
