I'm surprised that Tennessee isn't in that list.

I'm surprised that Tennessee isn't in that list.

It was pretty close, but the Dems' recent collapse in the rural Tennessee valley was more than made up for by Obama's good showing in the bigger cities. We're a more urban state than most of those on the list.

The GOP has changed also. In the 80s, they were a prestige brand. By 2008, not so much.

In Texas, Obama did a lot better in Dallas and Harris Counties. He got 57.15% in Dallas County compared to the 40.91% Dukakis got. In Harris he got 50.45% compared to the 42.12% Dukakis got. He also made the blood red suburban counties not as republican like Collin County and came close to winning Fort Bend County. But there are a bunch of rural counties that Dukakis won, that went for McCain that pretty much offset the gains Obama made.

Texas is so much more Hispanic than back then. Especially in the big counties.

Funny thing that Dukakis performer better in such states, while performing relatively poorly in Northeast, including an unimpressive win in his home state.

Here is the 1988-2008 State trend map. I guess this can be a good key to understand the results above.

Historically, Florida was one of the most republican Southern States. It voted for Eisenhower two times, Nixon three times and barely voted for Johnson and Carter.

1992 Brady bill and gun control and well as cutural issudes accounted for more of the change over.  And black candidates who tend to do fairhly poorly with the cutural issues do even worse on gun control.

I have a feeling Willie Horton might've done a better job scaring retirees than most people.
