or at least in the U.S.? Here are some good candidates

1920s - basically all the mistakes made in this decade influenced politics for years to come
1930s - the great depression and the beginning of the new deal coalition
1940s - world war II is basically the closest the U.S. has been to annihilation
1960s - similar to the 1920s, the mistakes in this decade influences politics to this da
1970s - beginning in distrust in government and a huge increase in registered indys. Also was the beginning of the deinstrialization of the country.

Maybe the 40's because of  WW2, the birth of atomic power and the end of the Depression.
