I looked up the electoral history of the place. I found out that the county has always been a republican one, with the exception of a period from 1932 to 1996 when it voted dem 16 out of 17 times. Is this county an example of the new deal coalition dying off?

You could say that it's the New Deal coalition dying off, but the raw numbers suggest a tangible amount of party switchers in the last two decades, which could be the result of a number of things (decreased union membership and influence, general switch from voting on economic to social concerns in western PA).
