If the DA is serious about defeating the ANC come 2014, they need to win here, or at least get a coalition together like they did in Cape Town in 2006. Either that, or they would have to make up for a loss here in Johannesburg, Pretoria, or Durban.

You mean winning nationwide? Of course, they aren't truly serious about that: they are aware what country they are in. Baring Zuma being taped raping Mandela (with the tape broadcast on TV two days before the election), ANC wins nationwide. DA's objective would be to increase their vote share, hold Western Cape and, may be, get the Northern Cape hung so that they could form an anti-ANC coalition government provincially there. As a maximum, they might try to give the ANC a scare in Eastern Cape (here, of course, Nelson Mandela Bay/Porth Elizabeth would be essencial), but even that would be hard. Nationwide, they'd be targeting, may be 25-30% of the vote - and trying to hold ANC to under 60%.


We are still, probabhly, 15-20 years before ANC could lose an election (baring a major split).

BTW, ANC got 51% in Nelson Mandela Bay. DA got only 40% - which is about the most they hoped for. The real disappointment is COPE, who got stuck around 5% - DA's hopes for dislodging ANC were based on a much better COPE showing and an anti-ANC coalition.
