Gingrich will apparently announce the exploratory committee late Thursday afternoon in Atlanta, after a meeting with Nathan Deal (who has sort of pre-emptively endorsed him).  I would presume that Deal will be present at the announcement.

No, he hasn't announced the exploratory committee yet.  It's just that news of the exploratory committee announcement has leaked out to the press.  He'll announce the exploratory committee on Thursday.  At some point in a few months, he'll presumably switch that over to a real campaign, but he may not even make a big deal of it at that point.  For most candidates, the "exploratory" announcement is the main announcement.  In the '08 cycle, candidates like Giuliani and Huckabee never even made a second announcement.  They just switched their exploratory committees over to "real campaigns" without releasing any statement about it.

woot. I'm guessing Deal and other top Georgia leaders will be there.

Do any of you think anyone else will be with him at the announcement? Senators, Governors, or Congressman not from Georgia?

I read on CNN.com the threshold between exploratory and full campaigning is only a raise or expenditure of $5,000.  It seems to me with the high cost of today's campaigns that the $5,000 could be met in just one day.  So, I don't think the exploratory phase will last more than a month or two, to be honest.

...? Does the FEC already have the record he's announced? I mean he could have signed them already and the announcement is just Thursday.

Thank goodness a top candidate is announcing. At least with him around we won't fall asleep in the debates.

What the heck could he possibly be waiting on?  He could be the first major to announce and get the media spotlight nearly all to himself for a while since no other candidate seems to want to jump in anytime soon.

It looks like my prediction that he will put it off a while may come true after all. Sad

We'll just have to satisfy our fancy by watching the start of the Buddy Roemer campaign until such time as Gingrich formally announces..

Republicans know how difficult Obama will be to beat, frankly. The hesitance to announce can't be attributed to anything other than fear. Run now and lose, and your political career is probably over. Democrats knew that getting the nomination in 2008 was basically the tough race and that the normal campaign would be a mere formality, and that's why they were jumping all over themselves to get in. They smelled blood. Republicans don't have such an easy shot.

Sure it can.  It can be attributed to the desire to follow a creative interpretation of campaign finance laws.  Just look at this botched Gingrich announcement.  He's obviously running.  He's not hesitating because he's afraid of losing.  His timing just got snarled up because it was suddenly realized that he still had financial interests that had to be cleared up before he launched his campaign.  Likewise, with folks like Pawlenty and Santorum.....they are already running.  They just haven't formally created any sort of campaign committee yet, because it's in their interest to use their PACs as a pseudo-campaign for the time being.

Probably a smart move in the long run, he doesn't want to get burdened down with a potential scandal.  You know the media would hop all over it if anything remotely suspicious were to appear.

Exactly, others may be afraid, but not Newt. He just has dozens of businesses to make sure don't get in his way

Oh sure, I wasn't saying all these delays are just due to fear of running and losing, clearly this case is due to Newt being a McMoneybags, I was just responding to the difference between Democratic candidates practically tripping over themselves to get in the race and how the Republicans are taking their good old time thinking about it and others are milking it for all the money that they can before they finally just say no. It's clear Republican candidates know that Obama will be incredibly difficult to beat compared to the Democrats thinking about the Republicans back in 2007.

Meh, I think it just hadn't occurred to candidates before that they could get away with being so brazen about using their PACs as pseudo-campaigns.  Or maybe it's just that the FEC is less of a stickler about that sort of thing these days, post-Citizens United.

I think this is definitely the first time we've seen candidates use the state PAC loophole (currently being used by at least Romney, Pawlenty, and Santorum) to this degree, whereby candidates set up PACs in individual states to evade federal contribution limits.

On the other hand, for people like Gingrich (who's turning 70 this year) it's probably the last chance (like 2008 was "now or never" for McCain) to be the nominee. How about this factor?
