I don't know why people think that McCain would win by a landslide in an election...if he was that good of a politician, then he would have won an upset over Barack Obama in rl.

Not sure about the 2nd part, but in 99 polls Bush was outperforming McCain against Gore.

Anyway, the nod probably would have gone to an establishment type like Lamar Alexander, not Dan Quayle.

Just did a little research on this topic yesterday that reinforces (albeit for different reasons) my belief that Quayle could not be the nominee in 96:
