I believe that it's dairy that's responsible for the tilt.

What's the connection there?

Not sure what he means. Dairy is common both in and outside of the Driftless Area. It is true that corn and other grains are less common in the Driftless Area, though.

A big part of the answer is historical settlement patterns. The Driftless Area is less suitable to agriculture than the surrounds, being hillier and having poorer soil. Thus, it was settled by poorer immigrants, generally from the rural north of Scandinavia, rather than the somewhat wealthier German immigrants who settled to the south and east (and many of whom were second or third generation Americans, their ancestors having originally settled in Indiana or Ohio). In an area where most local residents trace their ancestry to the same region since the late 1800s, that sort of difference can have a significant political effect.

Additionally, the relative poverty of the soil means the Driftless Area tends to be hit harder during droughts and other agricultural calamities. It also has kept somewhat more small farms; there are fewer large, industrial farms in the area because it is less economical. Even before the era of mechanization of farming, I imagine farmers in the Driftless Area tended to be poorer than farmers elsewhere in Iowa, Wisconsin or Minnesota.

(One might say that the agriculture of the Driftless Area is much more akin to the agriculture of Upper New England than to elsewhere in the rural Midwest, though this would be oversimplifying things since demographics and history also play a significant role.)

I think it is because of searches for Alabama the football team, not Alabama the state.

No idea on PA and CT.

Interesting thing. I tried it with Google.com for the German-speaking countries:

AUT: rich, small, good at recycling, fearful of nationalism & liberalism (?)
GER: rich, powerful, awesome, clean (LOL)
SUI: expensive, happy, rich, neutral
LIE: rich, small, GDP so high

Since when is Iowa "heavily democratic". It is leaning that way at most, but it is still a swing state.
