So, this map is of is the 1988 presidential election by congressional districts, as per the title.

All boundaries and data came from the 1990 Almanac of American Politics.

Looks like districts were a lot more logical before modern software made the really crazy one possible. Fairly predictable GOP landslide pattern. Dems win in minority districts, big cities, and on the West Coast. Worth pointing out are the Dem voting big losers in the Reagan economy. Farm Crisis districts along the upper MS and the deindustrializing Ohio River area.

I know, farm crisis and everything, but it's still amazing that Iowa was more Democratic in 1988 than in 2008, and second best Dukakis state after Rhode Island.

Great work.

I'm kind of surprised by the two southern Illinois districts.

Couldn't agree more. IA in 1988 has always been one of the most astonishing results for me.

Could I get a map that has the California CDs numbered, or at least the districts in LA and the Bay Area? I started making a CD map for the 1988 Dem primaries (with the limited data I have), but I don't know which district is which...

Also, are there any states other than AR, IA, MT, and WV that have districts that don't divide counties?

Almost certain that district is PA-18.  The district was gerrymandered by Republicans to get rid of Doug Walgren(who finally lost to Santorum in 1990).

Do you have results for New York City, either in the form of a zoomed-in map or numbers? I'm curious in light of the 1984 map in the other thread.

The farm crisis also explains why Dukakis over-performed throughout the Northern Plains: he also won MN, WI, and did better than any Democrat since LBJ in the Dakotas and Montana.

Did Dukakis get 40% in the Salt Lake City district?
