Yeah, there are a couple of places in the Middle East that isn't stuck in the 12 century.  Israel has a ton of gay people and has better LGBT rights than the US and many Euro countries.  It's technically legal to be gay in Iraq and Jordan though they are pretty far behind even conservative leaning western nations.

..but for the most part, he's right. (at least when it comes to homosexuality)

I wouldn't say it fits the twelfth century description with regards to their attitudes towards homosexuality at all. If we're using a European comparison.. you could go much more recent quite easily.

Actually, the Middle East was probably more progressive with regard to homosexuality in the 12th century than it is now. Islamic Fundamentalism is largely a 20th century response to modernity. It wasn't until as late as the 1980s that the dour, ultra-repressive Wahabbism promoted by Saudi Arabia and the Shiite Fundamentalism promoted by Iran became mainstream. If Islam were really stuck in the 12th century, the world would probably be a lot better off.

Even today the middle-eastern attitude to homosexuality is more ambiguous than they'd have us believe. Even in Saudi-Arabia there are quite a few men who engage in sex with other men. The thing is that for a lot of people over there the connection between some occasional and  innocent sex and the filthy sin of homosexuality is rather vague.

The interesting aspect of this murder is the slavery aspect, imo, not the homosexuality aspect.  Its normal in the middle east, and presumably will become more commonplace in the US as inequality increases.

So a good chunk of their culture is like one of those fundi preachers here in the US that preaches against homos but is actually one himself?  I hope you're not trying to say that's better than just being very very anti-gay.

You forgot your spin.  Remember, we're all already slaves.  Slaves with big screen TVs with hundreds of channels of sh**t them, food in our bellies, clothes on our backs, etc, etc.

Dude, if you think the slaves on plantations weren't fed (or for that matter clothed), you don't really understand the concept of slavery.  You see, slavery is useful to the owner; it is not done out of pure maliciousness.

I don't think so.  One works in the house, one works in the fields, another in the sadists bedchamber.  But they're all in thrall to the power of the owner.

Do you mind if my metal band uses that as lyrics?

No, I tried to indicte that contrary to contrary to what most of you seem to believe being gay in the Middle-East isn't the end of the world. (If you don't live in Iran or Arabia proper that is.)
