If he hasn't broken any laws, I'm not sure there's grounds to fire him.  Is he an assistant DA or AG?  I've heard both now.  If it's AG, that may be a bit different, since he'd be in a more prominent public position.

If he's crossed over into lines of personal harassment, then he should be fired.  But starting a blog about someone isn't grounds for dismissal.

He's an assistant AG. And he's been picketing in front of the guy's house, not just writing absurd blog posts. (http://gawker.com/5652397/michigan-attorney-general-defends-creepy-gay+student+harassing-assistant)

People get fired for a lot less severe stuff on blogs all the time. And poor judgment is a completely legitimate grounds for firing. There is no free speech employment defense for government employees if their speech demonstrates poor judgment (since the firing would not be about the speech itself, but the judgment demonstrated by the speech and the way it was made).

I just see that landing MI in a lawsuit.  Trying to fire somebody for poor decision-making based on something like this is just asking for a lawsuit.  Until he does something illegal, I don't see what Cox can do.

But you'd be calling for his immediate resignation if he'd used a swear word, right?

The assistant AG clearly needs to resign and get help. Shouldn't someone in his position have more important things to do? Furthermore, the student who was being stalked and harassed seems to be suspiciously attractive. Perhaps this is the assistant AG's incredibly creepy and ineffective way of trying to pick up good-looking young men.

Among other things, Shirvell has published blog posts that accuse Armstrong of  sexually seducing and influencing "a previously conservative [male] student" so much so that the student, according to Shirvell, "morphed into a proponent of the radical homosexual agenda"
Somebody is jealous.

^In addition to that, this behavior is clearly stalking.

Just watched the video, jesus this guy is anidiot.  According to this guy Chris Armstrong's biggest issue was "gender neutral housing".  How the hell does that benefit the "radical gay agenda" more so than the "radical straight agenda"?

No - but putting a jab in at my choices as a moderator on a thread about something completely unrelated is.

Cox has valid reasons to worry about this guy's credibility in a courtroom as a direct result of his unprofessional behavior and judgment here. Also, if there's one employer that would be tough to sue, it would be the AG's office. Could you imagine someone better prepared to fight back?

What exactly does he do in the AG's office?  If he's arguing cases, then he may bias the jury against the case, and while that may not in and of itself be grounds for dismissal (not really sure on the exact law here), it would give certainly give the AG's office grounds to move him to a department where he's simply pushing paperwork and "strongly suggest" that he find work elsewhere.

Well we know Cox isn't gay... since he had an affair with a woman.  But boy, wouldn't that be one heck of an epic cover for a gay politician? Tongue
