If Carter had run "the best campaign he could of[sic] possibly run", there's no reason to think he couldn't have beaten Reagan. Remember the polls were quite close and even had Carter ahead until Reagan's superior campaigning got the best of him.

Carter didn't lose because of Reagan, he lost due to his own mistakes and events of his presidency such as the anniversary of the Iran Hostage Crisis days before the election. Talk about bad press.
