I find this interesting so I thought I'd post it . . .

If Bush serves out his second term, we'll have two two-full-term presidents in a row. I was wondering when the last time it was that this happened. Fate may intervene and he may not serve out the term but the answer is the same even if you look for presidents elected to a second term who followed someone who served two consecutive full terms.

You have to go back to James Monroe, who followed James Madison. In fact with Jeffereson-Madison-Monroe, there were three two-term presidents in a row.

So before 2004, only twice previously has a president who followed a two-consecutive-full-term president won re-election -- Madison and Monroe.

This has been discussed before, but it is interesting.  See under "history,"  the thread is called "Interesting tidbit"  The interesting thing about this time is that Clinton and Bush are from different parties, while Jefferson, Madison nd Monroe were all anti-Federalist Democrat-Republicans.

Thank you for pointing this out gently -- I'm sorry for the repeat topic.

I am kind of surprised that this wasn't pointed out by the main stream media -- it seems more important than how the Redskins do in the last home game before the election!

Good point.  And this time, with the different parties it illustrates how polarized our country is.  200 years ago Madison and Monroe showed how much they were in concert.  While I like the Redskins and Red Sox analogies and find them interesting, they need to be kept in perspective.  As for repeat topics, we get them all the time.  But there is always something added that makes it new and interesting.

Also, three out of the last four Presidents were elected to two terms.

Even more interestingly, all the persons elected to a second term after another two term President, have always completed their second term.
