Sorry to hear about Stevens, but he died doing something he wanted.

What?  Plummeting 5000 feet and crashing into the side of a mountain?

Demond Lywellan (not sure of the spelling).

The usual spelling of that name is Llewellyn, fwiw.

Well, regardless of all political differences we may had with him as well as some controversies, we can't deny he was one of the most important Senators in U.S. history.

RIP (still hoping I may be wrong).

As someone deeply interested in the 1960s and 1970s era of the Senate, its a sad day.  I share the reservations many of you have had with some of his ethical decisions, but today is a day to appreciate his manifold contributions to American political life.  We've lost an historical figure today.

And the usual spelling of his first name is Desmond, too.

Ah, but the man in question was spelled Llewelyn.

You're forgiven for misspelling his surname, Jay-Jay... but misspelling Desmond? How could you? Huh

Can we get back on topic and lay off the J.J.-bashing, for a change?  He's in mensa for a reason.

Assuming it's true, RIP Ted Stevens, and all the others who were killed.

With the deepest sadness for all those who died, and understanding that all deaths are terrible and it's a shame that anyone would have to die this way, I'm not sure I can really understand you guys' reaction here.

The man was no great American historical figure. It's not like he was some sort of hero or man with great accomplishment. I don't really get why you're all treating him as if he was one of the most important Senators ever to grace the Senate with his presence (changing avatars now to remember some incredibly unintelligent routinely misinformed criminal geezer from Alaska? He's no Kennedy or Byrd, people), because even though I hate death, I gotta be the one to say it; Senator Stevens wasn't really 'all that'.

RIP regardless of course, but.. come on.

Rest in peace, Senator Stevens. Truly one of the greatest men to ever serve in the Senate. He will be missed. Sad

Actually, I questioned the spelling of the name overall, which is why I indicated that I was not sure of the spelling.

For once I agree with Marokai (except for the implied partisanship).

Thousands of people have died and continue to die in the wars Stevens voted for. We don't know their names or anything about them; most of them never made it to 30. This old criminal made it to 86 and we should erect monuments and shed tears for him? I think not.

RIP, I'll pray for his soul.
