Self-indulgent pretentious classic rock vs. fast-paced in-you-face punk rock?

I generally prefer the former since I regard greater technicality as a positive attribute for music. My issue is that the term "classic rock" is very vague & obfuscates what exactly you mean, though qualifying it with pretentious immediately makes me think of concept albums & progressive rock.

Yeah, I was thinking of putting progressive instead of classic, then I realized that such a distinction isn't exactly true (think Abbey Road, Physical Graffiti, Who's Next)

How about rip-off?

Since I have nothing else to do with my sig, I'm gonna do an Album of the Week thing. Cheesy  First one up is the fourth-wave Prog classic, Stupid Dream.  With it's psychedelic melodies and plain musical energy, this album is great if you're looking for a modern Prog album.

I got an iPod for Christmas, so I've been downloading, organizing, and putting CD's on my computer. I've downloaded nearly an album's worth of Blue Oyster CUlt stuff, along with Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. The rest of the stuff is pretty much already mine. I can't seem to find a good version of "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath. The live one I found sucked, and I don't want a version with Dio.

I could record one from my vinyl and send it to you if you want.Tongue

Surprisingly enough I'm listening to it right now.  I just put Side 2 on my turntable.

You know, I've never given Linkin Park much thought before, but their latest album is really, really good. It's kind of like they've stopped being mad at their parents for being on their case all the time and now they're more interested in being something of an alt-rock Pink Floyd.

It's a rather interesting album, yes, but an alt-rock Pink Floyd is far from their reach, especially considering that most would agree that a certain English band can make claim to that title. Wink

Sorry guys, gotta go with AB III on this one.  Or The Incident (well technically it was released last year but still).

Did anyone hear that three of the headliners for Lollapalooza leaked? Eminem, Muse and The Foo Fighters. Wow, that might be the worst group of headliners for a major festival ever.

I'd actually say that's a pretty solid lineup for alt-rock, barring Eminem.

Anyone going to watch any of the Grammy's?

I think it's safe to assume most people don't take the Grammy's seriously.

I don't get how they won "album of year" and lost ''alternative album of the year" at the same time. Amusingly they lost that one to The Black Keys, who are basically a straight up blues-rock band.

The definition of "alternative" has been muddled to where it's near a pen smudge on a paper.  I.E. The White Stripes

Ha, Leonardo DiCaprio is in a band along with Jesus! Seriously!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7jrEv3hONw

Leonardo DiCaprio is the singer and Jesus is the drummer. Haha.

The drummer looked more like Dave Grohl to me. :/

Then again, he might be Jesus.  I mean, he can do practically anything.

Does anyone else prefer the Bends to OK Computer?

Saying that in any hipster place would get you shot.Wink

But yeah, I've listened to both and I prefer The Bends, simply because there seems to be emotion and musical genius behind it, rather than just genius.

Coldplay's new album is god-freaking-awful. I used to rather like them, but since Viva la Vida, they've gone off an artsy pop cliff of no return. I think I'm actively starting to revile their new work, especially the way everyone just eats it up.

Just felt like getting that out there.

Coldplay is absolutely awful. They're one of the biggest piles of steaming dog sh*t in all of mainstream music.

That being said, they're a great way to get chicks to think you have a good taste in music. Tongue

This is very reminiscent of early Phoenix, which makes sense I guess since they were once the same band.
