I thought they were alright, but what kind of name is "I Am the Branch"? Damn hipsters.
Anyone enjoy the stylings of Robert Rich or Dream Theater?
I find Dream Theater to be a moderately enjoyable Prog metal band.
Still not as good as Porcupine Tree though.
Never listened to them, any suggestions for a beginning listener?

What Bob Dylan vinyls should I get next? I got the "The Times They Are A-Changin" LP and it is awesome.

If you enjoy Dream Theater? I would go with In Absentia, Fear of a Blank Planet or The Incident.
Giving what Porcupine Tree album to start with is all dependent on the listener's tastes - if it's metal, you start with the later work, if it's alternative rock or psychedelic, you start with the earlier.

"Free Wheelin' Bob Dylan"
"Another Side of Bob Dylan"
"Bringing It All Back Home"
Those would be my recommendations for you.

I would recommend either "Free-Wheelin' Bob Dylan" or his self-titled debut album, "Bob Dylan."

Self-indulgent pretentious classic rock vs. fast-paced in-you-face punk rock?

I generally prefer the former since I regard greater technicality as a positive attribute for music. My issue is that the term "classic rock" is very vague & obfuscates what exactly you mean, though qualifying it with pretentious immediately makes me think of concept albums & progressive rock.

Yeah, I was thinking of putting progressive instead of classic, then I realized that such a distinction isn't exactly true (think Abbey Road, Physical Graffiti, Who's Next)

I'd also take the latter 90% of the time, but I do like me some haughty old rock. Actually, I just listened to ELP's
Tarkus
, which has to be one of the most masturbatory albums of all time. I don't mean instrumentally, either, just the entire concept of it. "This armadillo tank is a metaphor for war, suffering and control or somethin' like that. Shut up, have some keyboards a-bloopdeep a-doopdoop. This sure is progressive stuff,
dude!!
"
That sounds like an insult, but it really is endearing to hear just how proud they are to reside in progressive rock stereotype, and musically it's solid as any. Not one of my favorites or anything, but a good listen.

How about rip-off?
Since I have nothing else to do with my sig, I'm gonna do an Album of the Week thing.
First one up is the fourth-wave Prog classic, Stupid Dream. With it's psychedelic melodies and plain musical energy, this album is great if you're looking for a modern Prog album.

I got an iPod for Christmas, so I've been downloading, organizing, and putting CD's on my computer. I've downloaded nearly an album's worth of Blue Oyster CUlt stuff, along with Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. The rest of the stuff is pretty much already mine. I can't seem to find a good version of "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath. The live one I found sucked, and I don't want a version with Dio.

I could record one from my vinyl and send it to you if you want.
Surprisingly enough I'm listening to it right now. I just put Side 2 on my turntable.

No. That makes little sense given the relative size and the relation of the hillbilly (as it was until not long before then) and cajun markets.

You know, I've never given Linkin Park much thought before, but their latest album is really, really good. It's kind of like they've stopped being mad at their parents for being on their case all the time and now they're more interested in being something of an alt-rock Pink Floyd.

There is absolutely no reason why you should not immediately do so.

Okay good! I ordered it last night.
By the way, has anyone noticed that the intro to Siberian Khatru sounds kind of like an improvistation from "Hey Joe"?
