McAuliffe is a major turn-off to a lot of people, myself included. It's fine to have a partisan as your chairperson, and I'd probably never endorse the chairperson of the Democratic party - granted, but you have to be able to see and recognize reality. Be a hack and lead the party, fine, but know reality when it's staring you in the face.

But there's a more fundamental problem than selecting someone who knows what's going on to lead the party for the Dems. They are almost going to be forced to move to the right after this election cycle - I don't see that they have a choice, on mainly cultural issues, but probably also economics. Universal health care coverage sounds good, but people who don't want their taxes raised will not vote for someone who is for it. The Democrats will probably select someone right of McAuliffe, maybe far right of him. We'll see.

The Dems don't necessarily need to move to the right...for the time being, they need to wait it out and see how the next two years shape up.  It is quite possible that unresolved deficits and a civil war in Iraq could create a very bad year for Republicans in 2006 without the Democrats doing anything.  In this case, they should stick to their principles like the GOP did in 1994.
