I always thought Alexander was the only Republican who could have given Clinton a run for his money.

If he's winning Ohio and Florida, he's certainly winning West Virginia and Arkansas. I think people here tend to exaggerate the favorite son effect.

Since 1960 candidates for President have won their home states 92.6% of the time. Clinton wins AR no matter what. And even Dukakis won WV.  It was a very Strong Dem State until 2000.

Clinton/Gore-339 EV
Alexander/Voinovich-199 EV

Alexander does a little better than Dole. However, Clinton still beats him due to the good economy, lack of foreign wars, and Alexander's lack of charisma. Voinovich fails to deliver OH to Alexander.
