And even now, for it's faults, it's pretty reassuring that you can walk into your local hospital to be seen without fear of massive debts or the possibility of being declined coverage.

And is this different from....say....the German healthcare system?

The German system is layered and not universal.

Could you perhaps just answer the question I've been asking since yesterday?

Do you....or do you not.....believe that people in Germany go without necessary healthcare because of lack of ability to pay?

And could you maybe also explain how you have come to this conclusion? Do you have any specific examples? Or is it just because the NHS claims this happens in other countries....or what?

What leads you to believe this?

Also....how do you think this happens? Do you think someone just walks into hospital and is told he doesn't have enough money for the treatment? (Despite the fact that everyone has insurance?)

If I were British, I would support abolishing the National Health "Service".

No you wouldn't.

What, now you're disputing my criticism of the NHS? It's one thing to say I'm wrong for being an opponent, but now you believe that I support it?

I think he means that if you were British, and had lived with it for all your life, you wouldn't want it abolished.

Fair enough, but why does he think so? I bet I'm even more conservative than most Tories--even if they support it, I wouldn't.

You are an American and your political views are shaped around American politics. If you had been born British you would be far more moderate than you are. Not even the LPUK fully support abolishing the NHS which shows what a fringe view it is here.

Saved my life on multiple occasions (including, like, three times last year), so yeah. The proposed reforms to the NHS in England are stupid and wrongheaded but aren't quite what critics think they are; Shropdoc for everyone! All the time!

But then most people in politics are wrong about the direction it ought to head in. Centralisation (including and especially hospitals) is the right way to go. Eventually this lesson will be learned, but probably in thirty years or something. People can be quite irrational over some things.

I can answer it by saying that most people have silly misconceptions about social policy in other countries.

The UK's health system is ranked 18th in health care efficiency, the U.S.A.'s is ranked at 37th.

Well, if I'd been a year younger, I could have gotten new glasses on the NHS. But nooo, I had to be 17 Sad

So yeah. It would be much improved if they scrapped prescription charges Tongue

(before I start I need to point out that this is from The Independent, so if it's a "wrong" newspaper feel free to ignore...I understand some people think anything that goes against their already formed beliefs and comes from certain papers is false by default and I can never remember which ones are "good" and which ones are "bad", thus this silly and pointless foreword)

Does this change any minds?  Is it as bad as it sounds?  Is there a reasonable explanation?  And the real question, do you chose to spin it or ignore it?

When did you stop beating your wife?

Most large organisations have a piss-poor record when it comes to whistleblowing, even when (as is the case with the NHS) doing so goes against official policy. I'm not sure what that has to do with the question posed by this thread, or why it should change any minds. But, of course, that's not the point, is it.
