What I mean is would you rather lose by a few hundred votes in one state and be bothered for the rest of your life by "what if" Questions, Or would you want to wake up on election day knowing you had no shot and you'd be lucky to win your home state.

Like Gore. That way, I would still have a pretty good reputation among many people/voters. Thus, I would probably be much more likely to succeed in a new career if I so chose, especially if that career involves marketing and reaching out to people. Also, if I lost by several hundred votes in a good year for the other party, then that would increase my chances of making a political comeback and winning the Oval Office.

It depends- on election night, without any thought to life thereafter, I'd rather get Mondaled, since at least I would know that I lost ahead of time and I'd be emotionally healthier for that particular moment (if I knew I was going to lose). With thought to the future though, I'd rather be Gored, since I could revamp my political career and run again if I so chose. Plus, history goes nicer on those who lose in nailbiters than those who get creamed.

So far I'm the only one to vote Mondale. I just think Gore wakes up at 3:30 in the morning and thinks to himself: "One more visit to Tennessee or New Hampshire. Or a few more TV ads in Florida or Nevada and I could have won."

While Mondale sleeps easy knowing there's nothing he could have done to win.

Look at it from another perspective, though. Assume that it is a good year for the GOP and your GOP opponent is beating you in the polls, often by double digits. Thus, you prepare to lose by a huge margin, yet in the end you almost pull off a victory out of nowhere. Thus, since you massively overperformed expectations, you can run again for President another time and you might be the frontrunner for your party's nomination in the next election.

Well if you're telling me that I can lose like Gore and still have another shot in 4 years then I'd go with that.  But if I only have one shot at the White House I'd rather lose big.

I would have hate to have lost like Gore. He had to feel like his heart had been ripped from his chest.

See I would have been honored to lose to Bush or Reagan but wouldn't want to be remembered as a joke like our buddy Walter.

I would rather lose like McCain ^^

Nothing I could have done would have made me win, but I still do a respectable showing.

Of the two opptions offered above, both a more horrible than the other.

Mondale. From the outset, he knew he didn't have a chance. Gore actually did have a chance to win, and squandered it. I would hate to have that biting at me my entire life.

Mondale.  I couldn't stand being so close to the Presidency, having it, and then having it taken away, dragging out for a month.  I'd rather just know.

Like McGovern or Goldwater or Smith lost.

I'd have known I'd done something right then.

I could never be McGovern...knowing I'd destroyed my party would be terrible.

Destroying one of the two establishment parties would be an added perk, but unfortunately McGovern didn't accomplish that.

Mondale'd.

Presidential candidates who get epically creamed usually get some sort of unique following (Goldwater, McGovern.)

Yeah.

You don't see too many Bob Dole/Thomas Dewey fans, do you? Tongue

*Bob Dole was a man of great character and I'd have certainly voted for him.

Mondale was boring. He was a generic establishment candidate and still could only barely carry 1 state. Then he lost that home state in a Senate election two decades later.

That's why Mondale is truly an epic loser.

I'd rather be Mondale'd.

Knowing you're going to lose big, you can be more honest and not have has many restrictions. Who knows you might gain some votes. Plus you can also go to bed early on election night.

Like Gore.

You see, for decades following, there would still a certain element in the country that honestly believes I was the actual winner of the election, but that I was cheated out of what should have been rightfully mine.
